Well, it was good while it lasted! Safeway has made another update to their coupon policy. It now reads:

9. Safeway will accept valid Catalina manufacturer coupon that is issued to a customer by another retailer only if such coupon is for a specific item.

This means no more Walgreens register rewards or $ off coupons from any other retailers. They will still accept manufacturer coupons for specific products that are issued by another store. Sorry to have to break the news...

"I read that Safeway wasn't getting reimbursed for RR so thats why they wouldn't take them, can't say as I'd blame them for that."

That reasoning makes absolutely no sense, because they WILL accept a catalina that is for a specific product. The writing for retailer reimbursement is exactly the same on the back for a specific item catalina as it is for a OYNO catalina.

I think the poster who suggested it was an "understanding" at corp level between the 2 companies is actually the reason.

After the disappointing news and reading these comments, I headed out to Albertson's (in the Springs) to blow out some of my RR's. I had no problem using them. Shewwww! I am hoping that Albie's will continue to take them in the future. I still have $50 to blow out!

I read that Safeway wasn't getting reimbursed for RR so thats why they wouldn't take them, can't say as I'd blame them for that.
It also makes sense that Wags would want people to use the RRs at their store, and that the manufacterer intended that also.

If Catalina says they will reimburse no matter what, then that cashier was mistaken about the reason. My guess is that this is a friendly arrangement between SW and WAG at the corporate level. WAG would prefer customers come back into their store with RRs and maybe they spoke with SW and SW agreed to back off on this? Anyway, guess it doesn't matter, but thanks for trying to get answers, Jennie! I have tons of Gillette body wash Qs left, and if it comes down to it, I guess I can go on Saturday and roll some of my RRs from Renu and Rephresh by getting body wash that I don't really need, but at least buys me more time to use my RRs on good deals.

Jennie, do you know if that's accurate that Albertson's like someone said above…any in Denver area that you might have gone to lately will take the RR?

Wish I would have known….I have about 60 dollars worth of RR I was going to use there this week. I got all fired up to do Walgreens and then use the RR at Safeway, and last week was my first Walgreens run…how disappointing. Now, how to get rid of all these RR I got??!! Guess I'll just be going back and trying to see what I can buy that I need or will use. :( Maybe Safeway got slammed with a ton of RR and decided not to give it's customers that much of a break.

Jennie did post about it and we discussed it in the comments and on the Facebook page a lot.

Gosh! I feel like I was totally out of the loop! I wish someone had explained that you could use RR at Safeway previously. I've had the pressure of having to go to Walgreens to try and use my RR before they expire for the past YEAR and to think I could have just been using them on my groceries?! In the future if things like that are allowed at a store, it'd be great to know (maybe in the Weekly Store specials posts?).

My Albertson will take catalinas from any store as long as they say manufacturer

I agree…this is a big bummer and it would have been nice to have some sort of notice, but I doubt Safeway has much of a clue how Walgreens Register Rewards work. I do have an e-mail into my contact at corporate asking why, if Catalina Marketing will reimburse them, will Safeway not accept dollar off catalinas. I wouldn't expect anything to change overnight, and maybe not at all…but it is worth a shot.

Oh, man! I have like $40 in RR, too, which I racked up thinking I could easily get rid of them at SW. I guess I will be doing some shopping at Walgreens this week…..

I just used about $80 worth of them at Safeway on Sunday from the Renu and other Wags deals this week. Glad I got rid of them at Safewat while I could!

I used one yesterday before seeing the post. Hope my cashier isn't in trouble! And just when we have a good RR making week or month (thanks Neutrogena), they take it back!

I am totally bummed about this! I was able to use Walgreen RRs last week, but when I tried to use it yesterday, they said that they couldn't use it because it was for Walgreens and that Safeway wouldn't get reimbursed for it. I was annoyed, because I was able to do this last week. I guess since the policy changed, that explains it. How annoying. It does say "manufacturer coupon" on it, so I guess I just don't understand why they won't take it as a regular "manufacturer" coupon. Oh well!

15 Anonymous June 22, 2010 at 8:01 AM

How can anyone really deny the coupons when they say "manufacturer coupon". I can understand the ones that are store specific. My catalinas say "redeemable at…", sure, I can redeem them there, but why not anywhere else? (In other words, it does not say redeemable ONLY at…which some coupons have said) I called catalina this morning and he said if it says manufacture coupon, they will pay the store for it, so it is really up to the stores, not a matter of the stores not getting payed for them. Do you have any suggestions? I guess just let the stores know I will shop elsewhere….what a bummer!

This totally ticks me off. I have over $40 in RRs to use at Safeway from Walgreens. I think they should have given us some warning instead of letting us use them one week and not the next.
